Frequently asked questions about protective equipment
What do the digits of an EN 388 marking mean?
They score four mechanical resistances, always in the same order: abrasion, cut by rotating blade, tear, puncture. The higher the digit, the better the performance; an X means the test does not apply to that glove.
Since the 2016 revision, a letter from A to F may follow: that is cut resistance measured by the TDM method, more reliable than the historic test on materials that blunt the blade. A final P indicates impact protection. A 4X43EP marking therefore reads: abrasion 4, cut not applicable, tear 4, puncture 3, TDM cut level E, impact protection.
FFP2 or FFP3: which should be chosen?
Both filter particles; they do not stop at the same threshold. An FFP2 retains at least 94 % of test particles, an FFP3 at least 99 %. FFP3 is therefore required where dust levels are high or the agent more hazardous.
Two points matter more than the class. Face seal first: a mask that leaks around the edge does not protect, whatever its class, and a beard compromises that seal. Then the valve: it reduces heat and breathing effort for the wearer, but it lets exhaled air out unfiltered.
Which standard applies to an electrically insulating helmet?
Two standards combine, and one does not replace the other. EN 397 covers the industrial helmet itself: resistance to impact and penetration. EN 50365 adds electrical insulation for live working up to 1000 V AC.
A helmet marked EN 397 alone protects against falling objects, not against electrical contact. Check both markings on the shell, not the sales claim alone.
High-visibility class 1, 2 or 3: what is the difference?
The classes in EN ISO 20471 correspond to minimum areas of fluorescent material and retro-reflective banding. Class 1 offers the least, class 3 the most, and therefore the best visibility.
The choice depends on traffic speed around the wearer and on the distance at which they must be seen. A sleeveless vest rarely reaches class 3: available area is the limit, which is why class 3 garments are jackets or full sets.
How long should a safety helmet be kept?
Until the date given by the manufacturer, marked on the shell or in its instructions — the usual order of magnitude is counted in years, from entry into service rather than from purchase.
Two reasons to replace it sooner, and they are not open to discussion: any impact received, even without a visible mark, because the shell absorbed the energy by deforming irreversibly; and any sign of ageing in the plastic — faded colour, chalky surface, crazing. The internal harness, for its part, is replaced more often than the shell.
