Street lighting with no trench and no connection
A standalone solar street light carries its panel, battery and luminaire on the same pole. There is no cable to pull, no trench to dig and no meter to fit — which makes lighting possible where extending the grid would never be justified: peripheral roads, plant yards, the approaches to remote sites.
Autonomy is the figure not to underestimate. A unit sized to the minimum goes dark in the middle of the night after two overcast days in the rainy season. We size on sunless days rather than the annual average, and we favour presence detection: stepping from reduced to full output as someone passes saves most of the battery without reducing the service delivered.
Two points are often forgotten. The ingress protection rating must match the dust and rainfall actually found on site. And the battery will wear out: planning access and replacement at installation avoids replacing the whole pole a few years later.
